Students from the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics in Durham honored Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy by volunteering at Triangle ReStores. Each year, NCSSM-Durham students and staff remain on campus for the holiday to participate in a day of service, choosing local organizations like Habitat to give back to their community.

More than 30 student volunteers split up between the Durham-Chapel Hill and Hillsborough ReStores throughout the morning and afternoon.

“This is my first MLK Day of Service with NCSSM,” one student said. “It’s been fun so far, and I’m glad we were able to get out and involved.”

At NCSSM, service is woven into the curriculum. Efforts start on campus and extend into the community throughout the students’ high school experience.

During their day of service, the student volunteers spent time cleaning and organizing donations, moving around furniture and rearranging building materials. Every day at the ReStore looks different, so there are many types of jobs that can pop up for volunteers.

Volunteering is a great way for students to make a positive impact in the community and help local organizations, all while boosting their resume for future college applications and job searches.
