“There’s nothing better than to be able to help somebody,” said Core Volunteer Frank Hiltz. “It’s just a feeling you can’t get anywhere else.”
If you’ve spent any time at the Cary ReStore, chances are you’ve run into Frank, a core volunteer of three years.
“He’s here about every day, even though he’s only on the schedule one day,” joked ReStore Manager Kit Luciano.
Before he became a volunteer, Frank was a regular shopper at the ReStore. “My wife finally said, ‘If you’re going to spend this much time there, why don’t you just volunteer?’”
His favorite task is helping people. He’s a go-to for new volunteers, always ready to show them the ropes. He basically owns the hardware section and is constantly reorganizing to ensure it looks its best.
Aside from his daily tasks at the store, Frank is also a talented woodworker. He takes many donations home to restore or transform, then brings them back for the ReStore to sell and raise money for its mission.
Growing up, his father was the superintendent of an apartment complex, and Frank learned early on how to use tools by helping his dad with repairs and maintenance.
In 2011, Frank launched his own woodworking business, starting with a booth at the Sanford Pottery Festival.
“I just enjoy creating things,” he said. From custom tables to potting shelves or bar carts for local businesses—if someone has a need, Frank has a solution.
When he’s not at the ReStore or in his workshop, Frank enjoys the company of his two cats and trying new restaurants with his wife.
Frank— thank you for sharing your time and talents at the Cary ReStore!
