If you’ve ever shopped at the Fuquay-Varina ReStore, chances are you’ve met Vic Safarian. Vic has been volunteering with Habitat for Humanity of Wake County at the ReStore for 12 years.
Vic began volunteering after he retired, looking for a meaningful way to spend his time.
"It’s my out to communicate with people,” Vic said.
After a career full of interaction, he missed the daily connection that came with working. At the ReStore, he found that and much more. A typical day for Vic is usually behind the register.
“We don’t have as many volunteers as we used to have,” Vic said, encouraging others to give it a try. “It’s a good organization, and you can see the fruits of your labor. You can see Habitat building houses in the community.”
100% of Triangle ReStore profits support affordable housing in Wake, Johnston, Orange and Durham counties. Habitat Wake is currently building neighborhoods in Raleigh, Knightdale and Clayton.
“A lot of people can’t afford today’s prices,” Vic said. “Habitat has a great program.”
Habitat homebuyers contribute sweat equity volunteer hours before purchasing their homes, as well as take homeownership learning courses as part of the program.
Vic, a Vietnam veteran and skilled fisherman, can likely be found at the beach when he’s not at the ReStore. One of his prized catches was a 472 lb. marlin back in 2009.
We’re grateful to Vic for his many years of volunteer service and the heart he brings to the Fuquay-Varina ReStore.
