This semester, three students from Cardinal Gibbons High School spent their mornings serving at the Cary ReStore as part of their Christian Service Leadership class, gaining hands-on experience while supporting Habitat Greater Raleigh’s mission of affordable housing.
Each week, Student Volunteers John, William and Jake helped process donations, organize inventory, refurbish furniture and prepare items for the sales floor. Along the way, they gained valuable skills from staff and fellow volunteers.

During the semester, the students took on a variety of creative projects, including building and painting a free library and helping upcycle a bed frame donated with missing rails into a bench.
The students learned how donated items are transformed into funding that helps families build strength, stability and self-reliance through affordable homeownership, and at the end of the semester, they presented to other students and faculty about their time volunteering.

“At Cardinal Gibbons, service and volunteering are ingrained in the curriculum,” said John. “It's a very big part of who we are students, and there are many opportunities for us to give back.”
The partnership between Habitat and Cardinal Gibbons extends beyond the ReStore as students regularly serve on Habitat build sites each month.
These opportunities reflect Habitat Greater Raleigh’s growing focus on engaging the next generation through meaningful service. Through initiatives like the Pope Leo Village campaign, Habitat is working to inspire young people across Wake, Johnston and Franklin counties to get involved.
“In that service to others, we may find that, coming together in friendship, building up community, we too can find true meaning in our lives.” —Pope Leo
